Chapter Six

When the healers finally let Langley out that day, the first thing that Aiden did was to talk to Langley’s parents about their mating, and to tell them that, at least for that evening, Langley was going to stay over at his home that evening.

He didn’t intend for it to sound as though he were commanding them to do it, and so Aiden was actually very nice, and calm, and polite—which he always was!—even though deep inside he felt a combination of giddiness and worry. He was giddy because Langley’s parents were well aware of Aiden and what he was in their son’s life, which made it easier to get their permission to bring Langley close even if only for a night.

But Aiden was also worried because Langley was still changing, and even though he didn’t seem to be all that different, Aiden saw the way Langley was fascinated with his own newfound powers. He’d even learned to create those sparks of electricity from the tips of his fingers. The man’s powers were growing at an incredible pace. Just this very day, Langley could shoot electricity from his fingers. Now he could form shapes with them, like balls of lightning that he was bouncing in both hands, knowing full well the damage it could do if it struck another person.

Aiden sighed as he looked up at the ceiling. The sound of water softly splashing as he settled into the bathtub filled the air for a brief moment. His eyes closed, leaning back. The warmth of the water seeped right into his bones, making him groan softly. He liked taking these little baths. It was a way for him to gather his thoughts, to make sense of the things happening around him when he needed some time to do so.

His entire body ached, partly from caring for Langley all day, but also because he was trying to fend off the young wolf from trying to touch him in a way that would have made him want to claim the man again. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to—in fact, he really wanted to—but he didn’t know if it was safe to have sex with his mate at that point. Langley was still changing, and any extreme changes in his body could be a bad thing.

Aiden was going to need to keep a closer eye on Langley, but he also couldn’t shake the feeling that he hadn’t heard the last of Edward. It had been more than two decades since he’d last butted heads with Edward, when the man tried to take Finn away from him after his son’s birth. The man was almost successful in doing so, too, if the people of Hidden Lake hadn’t rallied behind Aiden.

Edward Rutherford was a man with white hot fury at the entire world. Perhaps it was because the old alpha had still adhered to the old ways, unable to take the mate his heart desired, but the old coot had been too stubborn to die.
